I got a new job (F-YES!!!) that I will be starting in the new year and Photoshop will likely be an asset to me. The job is title is Image Processing Technician at a Geomatics firm and I will mostly be making satellite images into usable data layers for use in a GIS (Geographical Info. Science).

They use Photoshop to clean up images and reduce noise in layers in order to better understand processes. I will not be using Photoshop much but I think it would help me to know the basics at least, if I ever need to.

I have enrolled myself in Lifehacker Night School and have so far watched the first 25 minute basic run down of all the Photoshop tools. I am starting to understand all that I can do with these tools, but my god am I out to lunch with most of what I am doing. It amazes me the stuff I see posted here by the likes of Arch or Nibby done in Photoshop.

I want to learn but it looks like its going to be an uphill battle. Why did I drop New Media in University!?!?! Anyone know of any other good learning tools for Photoshop?

Here is a Tuesday TVR for your trouble.

Tutorials, practice, etc. If ya need help let me know.

Congrats on the job.

I'll be honest, I've learned a lot about Photoshop + GIF making thanks to Jalopnik... rather, Photoshopping things for the FP and oppo. <3

I think I have done more Photoshops in the last year than I have in the previous 10.

It helps if you make it fun.

I would like to see some examples of what they do in Photoshop to see if I can learn that. I will try messing around 'til I make something worth while.

One doesn't simply learn Photoshop...one simply learns to HATE photoshop.

But YouTube is the single best place to go, a lot of talented people will put up so many guides its pointless to list them. If you are so inclined, ou can probably pay for them too.

Been at it for a few hours now and am just getting frustrated, going to work on the Honda 50 for a while. Maybe tomorrow.

I'm in a similar boat at my work, so you're not alone. Bust some ass, learn, and take some names. I'll be right there with you.

sounds like you may be using 'Actions' and 'Batch Process' in Photoshop for the new job.

Actions are image editing settings you create or customize. For example, if you find that you end up using the same 'de-noise' settings (and -any- other alterations) over and over, you may find it useful to create an action you can just apply with one click. More info:

Batch Process can apply an action (either a default one or one you have created) to many photos without having to edit each one individually. some info here:

Congrats on the new gig. I work in GIS (the "S" stands for "systems" in my experience - looks like some have started using "science", perhaps to try to gain additional respect for the profession?) with a group of geologists for an oil and gas company, and we use the type of imagery you'll be working with. Our contract is with Spatial Energy.

I have only ever seen it called science, I mean it is a science by the definition of it. Well that's not the company I will be working for but will hopefully get lots of oil and gas stuff.

I guess the science is the study and use of the system! - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geographi…

Hope you enjoy the work.
